When fitness clubs first emerged, most of the clubs consisted of an exercise room, weight room, and an area for weights. Since that time, fitness clubs have made astounding improvements to meet the demands of consumers seeking to improve their health and fitness levels. During the past few years, the advancements in fitness products and services have opened up opportunities for people of all ages who want to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle.

The advancements and improvements in fitness clubs have included:

Personal Services: Fitness centers now contain a host of services designed to cater to their customers' personal needs. This can include fully equipped locker rooms, showers, saunas, hot tubs, juice bars, nutritional supplement store, fresh towel centre, food and beverage facilities, and childcare facilities.

Sport Facilities: Not only have fitness clubs improved how we exercise; they have also expanded to include recreational facilities for such sports activities as racquetball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, swimming, squash, and more. There are sport and recreation facilities that will appeal to everyone, from children to seniors

Fitness Classes: There are certified fitness instructors that will train and teach customers how to safely maintain a fit lifestyle. This includes weight training sessions, cardiovascular health training, nutrition seminars, yoga classes, exercise classes, aerobics classes, Pilates, kick boxing, as well as healthy weight loss programs. Many clubs also contain spa and health services that include massage, sports medicine, physiotherapy, cardio strength, core strength, and muscle reconditioning.

Education Programs: Many fitness centers now offer such educational programs as injury prevention, special exercise training, nutrition, fitness assessments, personal counseling, health and wellness, age related health issues, CPR training, improving children's health, and much more.

Personal training is an important fitness club service. Qualified and certified trainers help clients obtain their set fitness goals. Training includes: one-one- training, safety training techniques, designing personal workouts to meet the client's needs, setting fitness goals, providing motivational support, and providing follow-up appointments to check on progress.

Because fitness clubs can offer a wide variety of services and programs, memberships depend on the particular club. Prices can range from $15.00 a month for fitness centers offering a minimum of services, to more than $200.00 per month for clubs that offer an extensive and broad range of programs and services.

Because of consumers' demands for methods of promoting an active lifestyle and improved health awareness, the result has been increased improvements in the fitness club industry. Fitness clubs now provide specially designed programs and services that will encourage and support their members in their efforts to achieve their desired fitness levels. The future of fitness club growth is expected to increase with clubs constantly improving and enhancing their programs and services. No matter the age, there are fitness club memberships that provide something for everyone.
